While on a work trip in Kyiv, Ukraine, a business traveler fell and broke his hip. Shortly after his hospitalization, the traveler’s employer contacted Global Guardian for support.
Global Guardian immediately stepped in to help the traveler navigate the medical system in Ukraine and coordinate transport options back to his home country.
RESPONSE:
At the time Global Guardian was contacted, the traveler and his employer had incurred numerous medical bills related to pre-surgery medical expenses and lodging costs.
Due to some regulations requiring the use of national currency instead of foreign currency, Global Guardian engaged its local ground team in Kyiv to pay the patient’s medical expenses in Ukrainian hryvnia, while liaising with the traveler's insurance to confirm what was covered under the patient’s policy.
The patient underwent successful hip surgery but did not receive the expected degree of care from hospital staff during recovery. Global Guardian proactively deployed a local agent on two occasions to check on the patient’s status, pay hospital bills, and keep him in good spirits. With the Ukrainian airspace closed, the Global Guardian team also researched medical transport options via ground to local rehab facilities and to the patient’s home in Romania.
One week after surgery, the patient was released from the hospital and elected to stay in a local hotel for a few days to recuperate. Global Guardian paid the final hospital bills and hotel expenses on his behalf, ensuring he had no financial obligations prior to departing Kyiv.
After a few days in the hotel, the patient was ready to return home. Leveraging its local response team and resources, Global Guardian provided transportation via ambulance from Kyiv to the patient’s apartment in Bucharest; a drive of nearly 15 hours, most of it across an active war zone. Throughout the entire journey, Global Guardian communicated frequent updates to all key stakeholders on progress.
OUTCOMES: Ultimately, Global Guardian paid over $25,000 in medical, lodging, and transportation costs which in turn were covered by the traveler’s insurance policy. This removed the onus of payment from the traveler and afforded him access to the necessary medical treatment required. Thanks to the experience of its operational staff and its on-the-ground teams with local knowledge of security risks and driving routes, Global Guardian also coordinated and executed a successful medical evacuation, bringing the traveler home without incident. |
