A Global Guardian corporate client notified the Operations Center that one of its employees had unexpectedly passed away while traveling on business in Guatemala. The employee’s family resided in Virginia, and the client urgently requested assistance coordinating the safe and respectful transport of the deceased back to the United States so the family could receive their loved one and conduct funeral services.

Repatriating mortal remains internationally requires careful coordination, strict documentation, and respect for both legal requirements and cultural considerations. Given the sensitive nature of the situation, Global Guardian immediately mobilized its crisis response and local ground support teams to manage the repatriation process with professionalism, empathy, and cultural awareness.

- International Documentation: Transporting mortal remains internationally requires strict compliance with complex legal and procedural requirements. Each country maintains its own documentation and transport regulations that must be carefully coordinated to avoid delays.
- Multi-Entity Coordination: Repatriation required coordination between multiple organizations across two countries. Clear communication between funeral homes, airlines, and local authorities was essential to ensure a smooth and timely transfer.
- Respectful Repatriation: Repatriation of mortal remains is both a logistical and deeply sensitive process. The operation required careful oversight to ensure the remains were handled with dignity while returning them to the family as quickly as possible.

## MISSION AND RESPONSE

Global Guardian coordinated with the local funeral home in Guatemala that had custody of the remains to manage documentation and prepare for international transport. At the same time, the Operations Center worked closely with the receiving funeral home in Virginia to ensure all arrangements were in place for the remains of their loved one to be received by the family upon arrival.

Global Guardian’s local ground team in Guatemala played a critical role in facilitating the process on the ground. Leveraging established relationships and local knowledge, the team worked directly with the funeral home, hotel staff, and local authorities to help streamline coordination and ensure all necessary steps moved forward efficiently.

The ground team visited the employee’s hotel to retrieve personal belongings and ensure they were safely secured for return alongside the remains. By managing these sensitive details locally, the team ensured the employee’s possessions could be returned to the family with care.

Throughout the process, Global Guardian’s Operations Center maintained continuous coordination between funeral homes, airline cargo services, and relevant authorities in both countries. This close oversight ensured documentation requirements were met and transportation arrangements progressed smoothly, while the team remained mindful of the sensitive nature of the situation and handled every step with care and respect.
